[15:36]<Tux2> lol, hey, Mulreay, you do minecraft videos, right?
[15:41]<@Mulreay> Tux2 yep
[15:41]<Tux2> how would you like to play a new game before the general public
[15:42]<@Mulreay> Sounds good
[15:43]<Tux2> Only requirement is you record it. Also, it's better with friends. ;)
[15:43]<Tux2> Server: RSMV.net
[15:43]<Tux2> do the command /server colorshuffle
[15:44]<Tux2> It's minecraft version 1.6.2
[15:45]<@Mulreay> Recording is no problem at all.. with friends I have lots here that may be up for it.. craig and i were just recording a video
[15:45]<Tux2> cool
[15:48]<@Mulreay> Can't connect to that server.. in 1.6.2
[15:50]<Tux2> Hmm...
[15:50]<Tux2> RSMV.net
[15:50]<@Mulreay> I'm in
[15:50]<Tux2> cool
[15:51]<@Mulreay> OK what do i need to do?
[15:52]<Tux2> read how to play the game, then join an arena
[15:52]<Tux2> I'm getting on right now
[15:52]<@Mulreay> K should I wait to record?
[15:52]<Tux2> either way works
[15:53]<@Mulreay> Like you say better with a friend...
[15:53]<Tux2> lol, yup
[15:53]<@Mulreay> Craig are you available soon?
[15:54]<+Craig> I am around
[15:54]<@Mulreay> Fancy playing?
[15:55]<+Craig> My wife is demanding hang out time

[15:55]<@Mulreay> Ahh ok np
[15:55]<+Craig> I should be available in an hour
[15:56]<@Mulreay> an hour Tux2?
[15:57]<@Mulreay> Plus Tux2 can you email the name and a prefered link to me
[15:57]<@Mulreay> So I can link in the description
[16:00]<Tux2> Sure!
[16:01]<Tux2> What's your email again?
[16:03]<@Mulreay> Give me a call Craig when you are ready
[16:03]<+Craig> ok
[16:57]<+camerongray> Hey Craig/Mulreay/Tux2
[16:58]<+camerongray> Got my new server :D
[16:58]<+Craig> Nice
[16:58]<+camerongray> Currently deciding wheter to buy a proper RAID card or to just do software raid
[16:58]<Tux2> awesome camerongray
[16:59]<+camerongray> Proliant DL120 g7
[16:59]<+camerongray> Xeon E3-1220, 8gb DDR3 (Putting 16gb in), 2x1tb
[17:01]<+camerongray> I'll probably just go with Software RAID - Need to keep my power consumption as low as possible
[17:01]<+camerongray> As in the server should keep under 92w most of the time
[17:02]<Immental1200> Don't bother with the RAID... just take backups.
[17:03]<+camerongray> Tell me you don't do that at your company
[17:03]<Immental1200> You can even get file versions then, which I've found to be very handy with web servers when someone reports illegal content but by the time I check it's gone... but I can see the versions
[17:03]<Immental1200> We use RAID, but also backups.
[17:04]<Immental1200> Majority of the servers have a proper RAID card too
[17:04]<+camerongray> Good :P
[17:04]<+camerongray> You still need RAID though
[17:04]<+Craig> Why>
[17:04]<+camerongray> Otherwise if a disk fails, the system goes down
[17:05]<+Craig> Not true, backups can be made to work the same as raid.
[17:05]<Immental1200> Bear in mind I'm technically still the assistant though, the guy who started the company off before me is in his early 40's with about 20 years IT experience :P we're not totally useless cameron
[17:06]<+camerongray> But what if the OS drive goes?
[17:06]<Immental1200> We virtualise the servers, we can pull the image off the backup and transfer it to another server, bring it up within an hour ;)
[17:07]<Immental1200> But yeah there's also RAID
[17:07]<+camerongray> Yeah, this is also virtualised but I only have one
[17:07]<+camerongray> So if this goes down, everything goes down
[17:07]<Immental1200> We like to have at least 50% or so free capacity on the server, so we can use it to cover for another server for 48 hours in the worst case
[17:08]<+camerongray> Having RAID makes sense for me
[17:08]<Immental1200> Then again, even if we didn't need to have that available... I'd still like to stop adding things at around 75 / 80%
[17:09]<+camerongray> Then the individual VMs backup their data to my home server on a weekly basis
[17:09]<Immental1200> If you're going to do RAID, do it properly. Don't use a software one.
[17:10]<+camerongray> But cards are expensive :P
[17:10]<+camerongray> Software RAID, if done right works fine
[17:11]<Immental1200> However a software RAID gives no performance boost whatsoever, and generally is slower than a single drive.
[17:14]<+camerongray> It's just RAID 1 so don't care about performance, purely for redundancy
[17:15]<Immental1200> You want a funny Amazon review?
[17:15]<Immental1200> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Port-Sata-Raid-Controller-eSATA/dp/B003MAGXWO/ref=pd_sxp_f_r
[17:15]<Immental1200> Best bit is, his question is answered in the name of the item description.
[17:15]<+camerongray> lol!
[17:17]<Immental1200> Here we go... a nice Adaptec RAID card... perfect for you... sata3, 6 ports... oh jesus christ, £370
[17:17]<Immental1200> :P
[17:17]<+camerongray> lol
[17:17]<+camerongray> I could get an Adaptec for £50 but that's still a lot when software RAID will do the job fine
[17:17]<Immental1200> http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/controllercards/sataraidcontrollers/m159.html
[17:18]<Immental1200> That to me looks plain dodgy
[17:19]<+camerongray> lol, it's just FakeRAID
[17:19]<+camerongray> Same as this server has built in
[17:19]<Immental1200> Wait a minute... the server doesn't have RAID on it? My dell I got off eBay for 99p had RAID for three drives... proper RAID controller with a PERC battery and everything. Card that popped on and off the motherboard.
[17:20]<+camerongray> Just FakeRAID
[17:20]<Immental1200> Ah
[17:22]<Immental1200> I was impressed with mine, RAID 0,1 and 5... SCSI drives, dual-core Xeon, 2GB RAM, half a rail mounting kit, 3 73GB drives and Server 2003 Standard installed for 99p ... can't beat that ;)
[17:22]<+camerongray> Yeah, nice!
[17:24]<Immental1200> Got fed up of the noise, wasn't powerful enough to colo so I sold the caddies for £5 each.... then ended up getting £80 for the rest of the server...
[17:25]<Immental1200> I seem to remember it went for 99p because the guy had listed the make, model and year and that was it... nobody else dared bid.
[17:25]<+camerongray> Ahh lol
[17:25]<+camerongray> Mine was £350 but is a decent spec so certainly worth the colo
[17:26]<Immental1200> Ha, I sent the person a message asking for specs, got a reply an hour before it ended... and he must have added the info I asked for right before it ended. Who sells Dell servers and doesn't know how to lookup the service tag?
[17:26]<Immental1200> I mean seriously, first port of call whenever buying anything Dell... service tagh
[17:28]<jamer> our school computers im pretty sure cost over 2000 dollars
[17:29]<Immental1200> The college lab has mATX HP boards sat in full tower HP workstation cases designed for dual CPU boards... budget isn't exactly generous over here.
[17:30]<+camerongray> lol
[17:30]<+camerongray> The oldest we have are Core 2 Duo and they are being replaced at the moment
[17:30]<Immental1200> They got money to spend on the lab last week, just the lab, nothing else
[17:30]<Immental1200> Guess how much?
[17:30]<+camerongray> With i5 3570s!
[17:31]<Immental1200> £1,000 ... that's it. They had to get wireless kit for the networking class, because all the old stuff didn't meet standards. So we now have 5 wireless routers, 20 wireless adapters and then they spend the rest on hard drives, flash drives and RAM.
[17:32]<Immental1200> All the computer rooms vary... large majority is i3/i5 ... but we've got a couple rooms of Core 2 Duo's still...
[17:32]<jamer> weve got the i5 5770's with an intel boards crucial 16GB 1 tb drives and quadro 2000's
[17:32]<Immental1200> Everything across all the campuses... is Stone
[17:33]<Immental1200> Well built, cheap PCs aimed at education and business, cases look like crap and are way bigger than they need to be, but they do the job. And the IT staff don't have time to save money and build 3,000 + machines when they replace them...
[17:34]<+camerongray> We are all HP/Dell
[17:34]<+camerongray> All the new stuff is HP
[17:34]<Immental1200> The lab is HP... everything
[17:34]<jamer> all of our stuff is custom built :3
[17:35]<Immental1200> All the test machines that are taken apart daily... all the workstations in the corners... even 90% of the servers in the test DC next door are HP...
[17:35]<Immental1200> Almost all the networking gear though is Cisco, we've got network academy status from them so we get nice stuff
[17:35]<jamer> the only non custom built computers were in the process of giving them away
[17:36]<+camerongray> Ahh, we are completely theoretical so there is no subject or course that involves working on the hardware
[17:36]<Immental1200> Yeah... you've got money. Our budget goes under the county as one thing, then is split between 5 campuses
[17:36]<jamer> heh ... what theories .... were hands on
[17:37]<+camerongray> Yeah
[17:37]<+camerongray> Computer science isn't really designed for the same things as general computer type courses
[17:37]<Immental1200> Although as one campus is essentially just a training centre with classrooms and nothing else, and the other two are in rural areas with no proper IT stuff... we really should have more budget to play with
[17:38]<+camerongray> At the moement we are discussing hardware but at a really low level - i.e. within the CPU
[17:38]<jamer> Immental1200 my school you can literally see windmills from
[17:38]<Immental1200> Although apparently the Chippenham campus needs serial cables for their courses, but they don't have any cisco switches with the capability.. .and the course doesn't cover it.
[17:38]<Immental1200> Which I don't understand
[17:39]<jamer> though my school also has solar panels and we have solar lighting
[17:40]<+camerongray> We do have some server type projects (We have a rack of donated stuff that we run an IRC network from and muck about clustering stuff) but that's completely outside of the degree programme - More of a bit of fun organised by students
[17:40]<Immental1200> camerongray, have you heard about or seen the nao robots?
[17:40]<+camerongray> Yeah, we have them at uni
[17:40]<Immental1200> We got a pair of them this year
[17:40]<+camerongray> I don't work with them, but I've seen them and my friend does stuff
[17:41]<+camerongray> Cool
[17:41]<Immental1200> We're hoping to get the big version of them which is like half human height
[17:41]<jamer> we have them here too ... weve got one that we know for sure of
[17:41]<Immental1200> But the company that makes them don't want to let just anyone have them which sucks
[17:41]<+camerongray> We have a project next year to develop a robot to play football
[17:41]<+camerongray> But I'm meaning a small thing on wheels
[17:42]<+camerongray> Most of the stuff will be software/mathematical work
[17:42]<Immental1200> Haha, if you've got £10,000 I would recommend a nao ;)
[17:42]<Immental1200> Oh I see
[17:42]<+camerongray> This is why I do my server stuff/my job - Gives me something non-theory to do
[17:42]<jamer> we get per year (my lab) like 20-40K to upgrade and buy stuff with
[17:43]<Immental1200> The problem with the nao robots though is they can run for I think 6 hours on one charge fully maxed out... but they overheat after about 4.
[17:43]<Immental1200> And whilst the robot functions fully, it starts to act a little drunk when moving...
[17:43]<+camerongray> lol
[17:43]<Immental1200> Falls over, slips on the floor etc
[17:43]<Immental1200> Quite amusing
[17:43]<+camerongray> I've never used them
[17:43]<jamer> we have XD
[17:44]<+camerongray> My friend does AI - Boy does it suck up time
[17:44]<Immental1200> Do yours act drunk too?
[17:44]<+camerongray> Not seen them that much really
[17:44]<jamer> its how you program them
[17:44]<Immental1200> They started one up at 9am, by the time we got in the lab at 2 it could barely do the exploration mode and walk around the room, dancing was just laughable.
[17:45]<Immental1200> Nah, jamer we've got video of them runing the same programs from the morning and they do it perfectly.
[17:45]<jamer> Immental1200 also the grips will get dusty
[17:45]<+camerongray> Sucks up a lot of time doing AI - We were all having a ceilidh and noticed my friend sitting through in another room with a laptop trying to get the robot to work
[17:45]<+camerongray> We eventually begged him to come out :P
[17:46]<Immental1200> WiFi on the nao sucks, they put the access point on a table, and the robot was underneath / right next to the table and it kept disconnecting....
[17:46]<Immental1200> Which is surprising considering how small you get wifi modules in phones now, and they can do a hundred metres
[17:52]<jamer> that is something called interference
